The Šrgal House Ethnological Collection on the Sinji Vrh Hill

The Šrgal House is located on the Sinji Vrh Hill, not far from the Sinji Vrh Tourist Farm. Its appearance and its ethnological collection are a true reminder of the bygone times and lives on the Gora Plateau.

Years ago, before the original Šrgal House fell into disrepair, Mr Hieronim Vidmar, the owner of the Sinji Vrh Tourist Farm, took exact measures of the building and made a detailed plan. In 2011 he erected a replica of the Šrgal House close to his Tourist Farm, just a few kilometres away from the house’s original site. The new Šrgal House is a replica of the original house with only a few minor changes.

The Šrgal House has a thatched roof, which was the most common roofing on the Plateau in the past. Nowadays, however, a straw-covered roof is a true rarity in this region. The Šrgal House features also wooden gutters and a genuine old-fashioned smoke kitchen.  The original House had no exhaust valve or chimney. The smoke from the open-fire kitchen rose freely and filled the entire building, some of it could escape only through the windows and the roof. To avoid smoke and soot, Mr Vidmar built a chimney, which stands independently a few feet away from the main building. This is mainly a precautionary measure to avoid a fire, which could easily break out mainly on the account of the thatched roof. This type of chimney was typical for the Gora Plateau in the past and there are only a few of them left in this region. The attic of the House is turned into three single bedrooms and one bathroom for visitors. In addition to all that, the House boasts also an antique stone bread oven and a majestic well that stands in the yard in front of the House.

The ground floor of the House displays a collection of antique tools, equipment and other items the inhabitants of the Gora Plateau used while attending their everyday work and chores. The walls of the new Šrgal House are lined with photos and pictures of the original Šrgal Farmhouse.

The House is open for visitors during the opening hours of the Sinji Vrh Tourist Farm or on previous arrangement by phone on +386 (0)5 364 96 08 or by e-mail at .

The Sinji Vrh Hill offers also stunning views of the Vipava Valley and in fine weather you can even see the blue sea.
