Luscious Vipava Valley – apricots and peaches

The Ajdovščina Tourist Guides Association carries out a tourist programme titled Luscious Vipava Valley – apricots and peaches, that runs from the beginning of June till the end of August (the type of fruit depends on the date of the excursion).

Excursion Programme:

The meeting point of the tour is at the main bus station in the town of Ajdovščina, where you are introduced to your local tourist guide. The introduction is followed by a tour of the main tourist attractions of the the town, namely the remnants of the Roman Castra, the Edling Manor House, the Lavrič Square that bore a number of different names over the past, the remnants of the Roman Baths, the Ajdovščina Marketplace, the First Slovenian Government Hall and some others.

On request follows a tour of the Pilon Gallery or the Ajdovščina Museum. The latter houses an archaeological collection titled Fluvio Frigido – Castra – Flovius – Ajdovščina and a fossil collection assembled by an important local researcher Stanislav Bačar.

The tour continues on to the Šturje District, which is located on the left bank of the River Hubelj, past the Church of St. George. The tour leads on to the Cankar Square where a monument dedicated to the Slovenian writer and poet Filip Terčelj is to be found. On the way you also have the opportunity to see the very house, where the famous Slovenian painter and puppeteer Milan Klemenčič staged the first puppet performance in Slovene language in 1910.

PeachesThe next stop of the tour is a fruit-producing farm (apricots and peaches, though the type of fruit heavily depends on the date of the excursion), where you have a chance to see the orchards and to buy some fruit. Upon agreement a wine sampling could also be arranged as well as a break for cold cuts.

The next stop is in the village of Lokavec, where you have the opportunity to visit the Batič House with an ancient smoke kitchen and the Forge Museum of Mihael Kuš, within which the Černigoj brothers carry on the rich forging tradition of the village of Lokavec. The Museum boasts various forged items and presents the entire forging process.

Lunch at the Černigoj Farm

The last but not least stop of the tour is at the Ajdovščina Youth Centre and Hostel with a short break for coffee. From there you can drive up or take a walk to the Source of the River Hubelj, past the remnants of the once majestic iron foundries, which bear witness to the once rich iron manufacture. In the past the River Hubelj represented the border between the Gorizia and Carniola regions and was the driving force for the development of industry in this region.
