Veno Pilon (1896 - 1970) - great painter from Ajdovščina

Veno Pilon, painter, graphic, photographer, was born as a baker's son in Ajdovščina in 1896.
After the gymnasium graduation in Gorizia, he joined the WWI as an Austrian soldier. He survived to an imprisonment in Russia.
He studied in Prague, Florence and Vienna. His first exhibitions took place in Slovenia, Yugoslavia, Italy and other countries in the 20's. In 1926 he lived six months in Paris, in 1928 he decided to take a permanent residence in the city.
In the 30's he quit painting and concentrated on photography. After WW2 he collaborated in the first Slovenian film. In the 1954 the Modern gallery of Ljubljana paid a homage to the artist with an retrospective exhibition of his drawings and graphics (also some pohotographs) and in 1966 of all his artistic work.

He died in 1970 in Ajdovščina, where he returned only after his wife's death.

Veno Pilon is one of the most important Slovenian artists, his contribute to expressionism and new objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit) gives him a very important place in Slovenian and European art history.
